Launched in September 2011, Beyond Walls serves as a critical source of long-term, intensive support for participating children. Unique to the Twin Cities, this program is modeled after successful programs in ten other cities, including Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Chicago, New Haven, and Baltimore.
Beyond Walls’ mission is to inspire confidence and encourage academic excellence with urban youth as life-long learners and active leaders — both on and off the court.
- Participants are selected after the completion of an eight-week tryout process, during which they are assessed on attitude, attendance, and effort. New students may enter the program beginning in 6th grade. Beyond Walls stops accepting new students after 9th grade, at which point the organization shifts its focus to become a very intensive College Prep Program.
- Program components include in-depth, personalized tutoring in academic subjects, specifically tailored to each student; regular community service projects (every 6-8 weeks) throughout the year; and intensive squash and physical training three times each week, preparing students for competition in local and national tournaments.
- Expected outcomes of Beyond Walls’ programming are: assurance of high school graduation and post-secondary matriculation; positive personal development, including improved self-confidence, demonstrated resilience, and sportsmanship; and investment in the surrounding community through consistent participation in service projects.
Beyond Walls is proud to partner with three schools in the Twin Cities; Venture Academy, Hiawatha College Prep, and Washington Technology Magnet in St. Paul. Beyond Walls’ Academic Director visits each school weekly to meet with teachers, and to gather updates on student progress, curriculum, and upcoming assignments so that students can be given the greatest amount of support when they attend afternoon tutoring sessions.
